Hello to you all. I am new to this forum but do enjoy reading your comments.
My question is not terribly technical but is presenting a problem. I have a '97 FXDL with forward controls and want to get a crash bar (forgive me as the old days are creeping up on me, shall I say "engine guard"? According to HD the bar I should look for is HD # 49010-93, which has been obsolete for some time. I do want to stick with HD parts if possible and don't like the "U" bolt look on the aftermarkets. Are any of the other years and or models of frames the same as the '97 where the bar attaches?
Thanks in advance.
Elmo
Gentlemen, thank you for you responses. Obviously the HD parts guy I used was unaware of the use of "U" bolts on the OEM bar. That opens up more possibilities. I am still concerned with my requirement having forward controls in place. I will continue my quest.
I'm pretty sure you have to use a different engine guard when running 'forwards', different than the one used with 'mids'. By the way engine guards from older Sportys' will fit...b.

you need the one with U bolts if you have forward controls. They look good and are very sturdy. I use them on my FXD with forwards.
I have these on my 07 FXD with forwards, the are good and solid and for a year now have not given me any issues. I like them and they don't use u-bolts. I like this style and the rubber heel pads have also held up very well.

nothing wrong with the HD guard, U bolts are barley noticeable and are good and sturdy, )to the OP, I too remember when we use to call them crash bars).
