prefer black
I'm open on budget but want to be realistic. If 500bucks gets me a noticeable improvement I’ll put on new shocks
if 1000 makes it Ride like a touring bike I may consider.
But if it’s not noticeable I’ll leave my stock shocks

What are you looking for?
Ride like a '52 DeSoto? Stick with the stock shocks.
Ride like a Z06 Corvette? Replace with just about anything aftermarket.
It all depends on what you consider "improvement."

Ongoing there is a misconception that upgraded shocks only improve handling. Not sure where people come up with these assumptions.
for under $1000, blackline ohlin shocks which are all black. You can thank me later. I've been riding sportbike all my life, when I first got my dyna it felt like pure junk for suspension. It was soooooo uncomfortable over the slightest bump or uneven pavement. I'm too used to a good suspension, slapped on some Ohlins and never looked back.
Throw down a good seat on top of it all and that's the best u can get for what your working with. Improvement yes....drastically I would say that's very subjective but I will say for myself for 800 bucks it was worth every dollar. If you want drastic changes you gotta pay to play.

You should also consider replacing the front fork springs with a more responsive after market set. The OEM set-up has been in dire need of improvement for handling and ride quality for a long time now.
54633-00 & 54634-00 from here: http://www.boardtrackerharleyonline....right-54634-00 will make a night and day difference. then preload adjusters to stiffen the front fork springs. At the very least this is what you need.

ahhhhi DEFINITELY urge you to try and demo a bike with legend revo a's on it. it will change your harley life view lol. my dyna can either float down the road like a big touring "boat" or i can dial it up and carve corners with the sport bike guys with ease.
What NORTY said...... what are you looking for? I put air shocks from a '13 RK on my Superglide, I doubt they're anywhere near "high performance" but I LOVE the ride. Of course I started with Burly slammers so that could have something to do with it.
Good comparative shock tests are hard to find, but this one from DK is pretty good. It does fail to include some popular choices, sadly.
