Default 1999 FXDX tail light super bright then burns out

Working in my son's Dyna.

His tail light will be super bright, the burn out. We put a voltage meter on the bulb terminal and it seems to iterate from 0 volts, to 10 volts to 60 volts then repeats...

Ideas on where to look to fix this?

I unplugged the little pig tail that has the bulb receptical in one end and plugs into the junction at the fender. I then tested the terminals directly and have the appropriate 12 volts so I knew it was that pig tail that was shorting out.

Part of the issue was/is also the front brake lever... it's like the plunger that comes out of the reservoir doesn't push the lever forward enough to make contact with the switch so it makes it look like the brake light is alwars on, so I need to look at that as well.

Where is the 60 volts coming from?

Incandescent bulbs sometimes get "super bright" in the process of burning out, but it usually only lasts for a very short time.

Are you shure its the plunger and not the switch?
Check out this thread for more info: Brake lights on

You're welcome, my pleasure!

Members helping each other in here is why I volonteered as a moderator a long time ago (12/2010)

Did you find the culprit?

I think (I'm looking at this at work - will know more once home) but I think we need to make sure the brake brackets etc... are tightened up correctly - that's my working theory at the moment.
