Having trouble with my FXD. Starts with no problem but cuts off after a few seconds. Keeps doing the same over and over. She ran fine about a week and a half but now no. Any advice?
Shouldn't be a delivery problem. It was just working..
Everything was working before it failed.
When you say smoke out of the carb, just when it stalled? Not saying normal, but I have seen that.
Does it idle at all? If it is only running a few seconds, is it really running? You keep cranking on something and it sorta sounds like it running if it is trying a little.
Fuel or spark.
Fuel pump is pressurizing? Could check for spark. If you got spark, probably need to check fuel pressure. No codes?
Can check plugs to make sure they are wet. Though that is not 100%
Check and clean your float, it could be sticking or have a small piece of crud blocking the passage.
Sometimes just dropping the float bowl will flush it.
Shouldn't be a delivery problem. It was just working. '08, 7,000 miles. Smoke did start coming out of the air filter intake.
Well... it should be running too... so, check your fuel delivery. Ign switch on, run switch on - hear the pump pressurize.. does it stay pressurized (without the engine running) or does it pulse? Check your battery cables too... yeah, I know.. you didn't mess with them.... which means you may never have messed with them.. so they could be loose or corroded.. lots of stories out there about running issues that came down to poor battery connections.
Thank you for all your input. Ill try to answer all questions. When I turn on main power I can hear the primer start. I press start and the engine starts right away. It runs on its own for two seconds then turns off. Even if rev the throttle during the two or so seconds it still dies. I recently put about 3 gallons of new gas in it. The smoke that came out of the air intake happened after trying to start it numerous times. I did recently replace the fuel line and quick disconnect from the tank. Once done I did run the engine three times for about 30 minutes each. One asked about the float and bowl. I looked through my repair manual and found no reference to it. Is the FXD capable of reporting error codes?
You need to figure out if it's running out of gas or spark. One way is to pull a plug after it stalls. If it's wet it's loosing spark. If dry it's probably running out of fuel.
