Default Starter Recommendations

I've been having some issues with my bike struggling to crank, and after some troubleshooting and performing a bench test I have confirmed my starter is bad. I have a 2003 low rider and I would like some recommendations on after market starters. Zero way I am paying $500 for one from Harley. Thanks in advance.

I ended up rebuilding my solenoid last year, but at the time I did a bunch of research on replacement starters... As Jason said, All ***** was the clear winner based on all the reviews, specs, and user feedback I came across (here and elsewhere).

I'm not sure where you came up with $500 for a stock starter, list is $341.40 & you can get one from Surdyke for $269, the stock starters are very good.

These starter motors are very dependable, they rarely go "bad".

Why don`t you tell us how you went about troubleshooting this issue, maybe we can save you a bunch of money...

You could put a new clutch in. I replaced mine my 98" with 9.7 compression. I got a terry , been good for around 35k. Powder coating came off in a few spots.

One interesting thing I noticed, that bike starts good, and does not get rode in spring or fall as much. My stock ultra, gets more cold weather riding. But I noticed when it sits for a bit, it may have some kick back. Even if was on a charger, even riding 50 miles, with stops But put some miles on, and no issues. Even since I put new cycle electric volt reg and stator. New battery maybe, but it started doing this when battery was couple years old. Check charger. I was surprised how many miles it took to really keep it charged.

Also what I noticed is how the stock engine and stock starter had issues with kickback, but not 9.7 with beefier starter. I bought a new starter clutch, that I hope to instail before I have to do it on the road. Cheaper. See if its the starter or clutch that makes the difference.

Take it to a reputable rebuild shop. Probably be located in older part of town. I'd trust one of those over any out of a box.
