Default Lifter issue

I've got an 01 Tsport and I pulled my cam plate to upgrade to hydraulic tensioners and found this:

The lifter riding on that cam was a little reluctant to come out, but I didn't really have to force it out. I'll be checking the cam bore tonight.

The rest of the lobes were not great:

I'll check my pushrods tonight and make sure they're still straight.

I found some stock cams and lifters for a good price and I'll throw those in.

Any advice on testing lifters? The ones I pulled look fine, but clearly something went wrong.

Anybody have anything else I need to check before I button this all up?

Your first picture actually looks like the roller may have seized...

I agree, but they're all moving freely now.

What do the lifters look like on the roller end?

On those used lifters, make sure roller is smooth and not loose. Tear them down and clean them. Make sure they look good inside and that keeper is snug back in groove.

Just make sure they are oiley inside. Don't pump them up.

They all have lateral play, but spin with no trouble. I'll pull them apart tonight. Anybody have a link for a tutorial on that or can I find it in my manual?

Side to side (end play) play in roller. No play that you can detect other direction . The manual says to replace. Your check is a poor man's check. Do YouTube search. Most Harley's have a ball check. Some lifters with a flat grooved bleed disk are hard to check without experience.

Lifters pump up to no clearance. The valve spring overrides any over pump since if it did not, the valves would leak. As designed, the bleed off is a measurable amount with a bleed of weight and stopwatch. If good shape inside after cleaning with Gunk Carb cleaner, they are probably OK.

No paid mechanic could chance it.

Replace the lifters. Or have someone inspect them that is very familiar with roller cam componants.

With that much erossion on the lobes the rollers have got to be compromised!

They will be replaced. I'm just wondering if there's anything else to inspect that I have overlooked.

Replace the lifters with new ones. Might wanna swap out the cams while you're at it.

Throw those cams, lifters and the "New" used lifters right in a garbage can. You seriously just missed a catastrophic engine failure. Weather it looks like it or not that one lifter was about to wipe out your whole motor. Is your whole motor worth a couple hundred dollar gamble? Buy some new s and s standards lifters, new koyo inner cam bearings, if those used cams are in perfect shape use them and you might want to throw those pushrods in the garbage can too. Spend a couple hundred now or a couple thousand later...you won't get lucky twice lol.
