My Dyna is the same year as yours and I had the same issue until I replaced the stock compensator with a baker unit and replaced the starter clutch with a higher quality one from evolution industries. As others have suggested make sure your battery has a full change.

How much compression should it have

9.2:1 is the stated but it's probably closer to 9.1:1. Cranking compression of about 190

A bad comp is going to cause a knock, clunk or clank, A grinding sound is typically a bad starter clutch and weak battery.

Had the same issue with mine last year. Ended up being the battery. Tested fine but would damn near always clunk and kickback on hot re-start. Replaced the battery and cleaned all the connections including the ground and have not had a problem since. What surprised me the most was the battery I replaced in '20 was the original from '13 according to the sticker on it.

In stock form the ccp should be 165-170.. the only way to get it to 190 is earlier IVC or shave the heads to reduce combustion chamber size and then there's always a piston swap..

Based on your calculation of 9.07 static compression with the "STOCK" IVC of 34*

With those numbers punched in to the RB Racing advanced compression calculator or Dynamic cranking compression ratio based on an IVC of 34*

It still only comes up to 172 CCP...

Not sure what IVC timing you are using....
