I've searched but couldn't really find anything that seems like my problem.... I've got a 07 dyna fxd 96ci and it will start right up when first take it out. But now when it gets hot and I try to start it up it has a grinding noise like the teeth aren't lining up. Now if I give it a little twist it helps it start. Only thing I know it has v&h big radius exhaust with baffles, v&h fuel pak and open better air breather. Also I've been trying to find out how to check timing on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated 🙏
thanks
All 07's are EFI and the ECM, along with all the damn sensors, controls the ignition timing and fuel map. Basically, ya ain't gonna change it, it's computer controlled. Hot starts have always been an issue, generally gives a kick back. Ya might wanna get a Hayden Primary Chain Tensioner then pull the primary cover and remove that POS HD ternsioner. The OEM unit keeps tightening when there's slack in the chain. THAT leads to and over-tight primary chain which will cause the clutch bearings to go out.. The Hayden might correct the noises. My 07 FXDB did it after it hit the 1500 mile marker. So I did some research and converted it to a 105" EFI to Mikuni HSR 42 ride. Did that at around 40,000 miles. Got over 104,000 and still kickin ***.
How old is your battery? Have it load tested regardless. Check battery cable connections at both ends, make sure they're clean and tight. Did I miss how many miles are on the bike? It sure has some signs and symptoms of a bad compensator.
Don't like the Fp3.. Sounds like to much fuel on hot restart.. Only saying that cause you say you crack the throttle a little, which doesn't add fuel but will allow more air.. Maybe some one who uses an Fp3 will chime in.
First off its got 35,000 miles. I pulled the starter and the ends of the gear are shiny. Drained the oil and it was super thin and brown. Pulled primary off and seems to look good in there. BTW I just got the bike and rode it one time
