The windshield I got with my FXDC had to have been designed for a 6' 5" rider! I prefer to ride without a windshield, but if I need to use it, I want to look over the top, not thru the shield. I chopped my FLHR windshield years ago, so I had an idea of what I needed to do.
Tools Used:
Windshield Template - I copy the contour of the windshield, cut out the template, fold the template in half, cut it vertically in half later to attempt to even out the new cut side to side.
Then I use blue painters tape on the outside of the shield to prevent scratches and give me a surface to trace the template on.
I take the bike outside since there will be lots of shavings during the cutting. I use tie-downs to secure the front wheel. I don't want it to move during the cut.
Now I cut it, sand it with foam coarse + medium sanding blocks. Were done for now!
I have a hand orbital sander I plan on using to give it a final touchup. I left the paint tape on, because I'm going to paint the lower portion of the windshield.
Here is the final look. I like it. Since I painted my lower fork sliders black and my upper fork tubes are silver, I like the contrast of the black lower / clear upper of the windshield. I'm still playing with the height of the windshield (moving the quick release mount up and down). I'm going to wash it after 48 hours.
