Question Fork Oil Measurement?

I tried to do a search, but I'm not really coming up with what I'm looking for. Is there a way to measure the proper fork oil level if you're not sure of the capacity? I changed my forks and I'm not really sure what model they came from. All I know is that they're a little shorter than what I had previously. I'm not even sure if the previous forks were factory size. Just wondering how I know what the proper amount of fork oil is when I don't know the capacity.

Does your manual give the Top of Compressed Fork Tube-to-Oil Level measurement? ... Use that

Ok...so after lots of searching, I read that I should just use the same air gap as factory, which will alleviate needing to know the capacity (volume) of oil I need. Makes sense. If anyone has any input, I'd appreciate it...but I think I have it figured out.

Yeah I didn't see your reply. I appreciate it though. Now I just need to find a measurement...cause the service manual only gives volume.

If you don't know what forks you have then the service manual won't help either. If you can't figure out what forks you have you're going to have to do some experimenting. You need to make sure that when the fork is completely compressed there is still a small airspace at the top of the fork. The tricky part is accounting for the volume taken up by the spring.

They're the same diameter as the factory forks. Everything is exactly the same but they're a little shorter. If I can find the air gap measurements I should be fine, but I may go with the experiment method...lol
