While I still had issues with starting and will get back to it but I also had to clean some stuff with the inner primary..
Some time ago I replaced the inner primary bearing and got it cocked. It misshaped the case. I figured to clean it up and make sure it was straight.. I made an RnR tool to ensure that the bearing was straight.
Notice that the bearing cage burrs that stick out, I wonder if this was caused by the race being distorted and causing the rollers to be forced up against the cage..
So in order to make the bearing hole reasonably straight, I needed a lap. Didn't have one so I made one out of a endmill holder and a press fit piece of aluminum. Had some pipe and turned the ID to a press fit on the endmill holder then turned the OD so it was a snug fit in the case bearing hole.. I ran it with oil until it ran smoothly then added some lapping compound to grind a little more.. I ended up with about 0.0015 press fit and the hole ain't perfect but bearing lined up much better.
I also went back to the SnS inner bearing race to stop the walk.. I also cut tapers in the inner primary bolt holes and used shoulder bolts to keep oil from leaking down the bolt shanks.
After these mods the bike still has hard starting when cold. Looking at the cranking voltage, it would drop to 8.8 volts. My battery tester said the battery had 347 CCA on a 320 CCA rated battery. I went through and soldered all the cables (2 gauge wire). No change. Battery charges right up to 14.3 volts after starting. I check the plugs and they are always wet.. I cleaned the plug wires and connections and still hard to start. After running the plugs looked great. Anyway I think I finally figure it out. Bike has a DTT ignition and a CV51 carb, A short time back, I changed the cranking delay from 0 to 1 rev due to concerns for kickback. I think that the motor is simply flooding. My typical starting procedure was to crank the throttle twice then open the enricher all the way and hold down the rear CR. With the extra cranking delay, the motor would flood. Also part of the issue may have been a leaking enricher valve. I replaced it. Also I dropped the intermediate jet from a 48 to a 46. I'd been getting about 35-37 mpg. Last tank I got 39.6. Motor has alway been starting fine after first start..
