Default Forward Controls Question

Im going to fit a set of forwards to my FXDX, Im aware that this will leave a hole in the primary side where the shifter goes through, will there also be a hole at the back of the primary also? Whats the best way to block these holes? Are they under pressure or will a couple of black bungs do it? I could always get another inspection cover with no hole presumabley?

Default RE: Forward Controls Question

I had the forward controls put on mine when I bought it. They put black plugs in it for me.
I just picked up some plugs from the local true value hardware store. Just figure out the size and pick some up.

If it's that easy, I'm glad! It looks like you have a chrome/silver plug fitted?

If the holes are left does the trans oil actually come out? Or is it a sealed gallery/tube that the shifter rod passes through?

the outer primary is the easy fix, buy the small primary inspection cover and gasket to replace your cover that has the hole in it. get one from the wideglide model, they already have fwd. controls. the shaft will have to be cut so that it can be removed from the inner primary cover. may want to cut it between the inner pri. cover and engine. a long process with a piece of hacksaw blade. install plug from inside out with silicone sealant. maybe while you are in the primary consider installing a M6 chain adjuster. it's a pretty neat and functional add on. good luck. (this is for the 99-05 models)

It's just a sealed tube the shaft passes through. Nothing will leak out.

my forwards came with a small chrome cap that went over the end of the shifter shaft. i had it powder coated black of course and got a black inspection cover. doesn't look bad but I'll probably cut the shaft off someday.

Thanks for all replies, it has been helpfull!

I can see now that the work to the primary is cosmetic, and to be honest thats what I was concerned about, leaking trans fluid! But since that is not the case I'm going ahead and get the forwards, it's going to be a lot more comfortable, my 1200S was fitted with forwards and I have missed them!

The one thing that I can see that's going to be a pain the **** is doing oil changes. It looks like I'll have to remove the shifter to get to the oil filter. But, oh well, it's worth it.

You should only need to remove the linkage where it connects to the shifter rod.
