Default "Essentials Kit" for Dynas - Am I missing something?

The Harley dealer wanted to sell me on the Dyna® Rider's Essentials Kit whenI bought my new '08 FXDC.

(H-D part 96359-08) for $826.65.

From the H-D website: This kit includes a Quick-Release Detachable Windshield, Detachable Sissy Bar Upright, Passenger Backrest Pad, Luggage Rack, and all necessary installation hardware. A special advantage to purchasing this starter kit is the promotional limited edition Skull Belt Buckle that is included with each kit.

However, when pricing these parts separately, I come up with a total price of around $523. This includes the windshield for $339, the luggage rack + back rest for $124 and a back rest pad for $60. I didn't include any "mounting" hardware, although I didn't see any extra hw that I would need... I could be wrong!

Why is there such a big difference in price? Is it the belt buckle that costs so much?? Am I forgetting some hardware or something that H-D leaves out when purchasing separately?

Just curious if this was another way for H-D to make another "Hundreds of Dollars" from me.

yep your missing something...the rack and backrest are detachable, so you have to add in all that hardware...plus they have to move the rear turn signals, you also get a nice harley motorcycle cover

That kit isn't very essential IMO. Waste of money if you ask me............[:'(]

Im curious as to what the "limited edition skull belt buckle" looks like.

andYES the stealership has found another way to part you from your cash...
Look around and do some research and buy the mods you want _not_ what HD wants for you. (read as whatever their overstocked on)

I didn't care for the kit myself.

when I bought my FaT Boy, boththe chrome girl and salesman, talked me out of it. I bought everything (except for that PRIZED belt buckle) for about $100 less than the kit.... plus,I saved another $95 by getting a rigid mount sideplate instead of the detachable one... then I saved $315, at the advice of thebusiness manager,by doing the install myself.... took all of 30 minutes including the engine guard.that says a lot about the dealership..... of course, they know I'll be back for more goodies.....

Essentials huh...if you want exactly what you want for your bike, skip this kit. You can pick out your own windshield, backrest etc. there are many different styles and aftermarket choices too.

It just cracks me up..."essentials". If these things are truly essential, then they ought to just come with the dang bike! Granted, these are things that many people will ultimately buy for their bikes but I'd much rather just pick and choose the individual pieces that I want as I want them.

But it's a nice belt buckle!
Come on, whens the last time you told your buddies that you just bought a $100 belt buckle?

Yeah, I couldn't figure that one out myself either, when I asked the salesman,I got that deer in that headlight look.
