I think is was a damn good thing you weren't going any slower. I've always heard old-timers say that you should maintain your speed, or even speed up, concentrate on keeping the bike straight up, and let the dog decide if he's going to get run over or run beneath your bike. Anything below 15 mph and you rapidly lose the gyroscopic effect of your wheels. Sorry to sound like a professor.
From what I've heard, faster might have been better. I know a guy that hit a coon at about 60. Just held the bars straight and tight and hung on for the ride. Trying to swerve is a bad deal....if you hit itwith the wheel turned,you're down for sure.
I splattered a rabbit earlier this summer at 55. The only dried up stuff I had on my bike was rabbit blood.
