Default Fork Stem

Does the fork stem on the lower triple tree come off? If so, how? I have the owners manual and unless I am just over looking it, I cant seem to find where they say if it comes apart or not. It looks like it should come apart, has a retainaing clip on the bottom...but I cantget it tomove anyway, shape or form.

Thanks,

Yes, it comes out. The lower bearing is press fitonto it which holds it in place. In order to remove it you have to press it down and out of the tree. The retaining clip is there just to keep it from pulling into the tree when you tighten it all up. Just to be clear you have to press the threaded part of the stem toward the tree.

im sure this does come off - but it is not easy. if you look at the dyna triple trees listed on ebay, the pics always show the lower tree still assembled with the stem and bearing. i tried to get mine apart last year - no luck.

That stem is installed via a huge press/interference fit, I was told it was about a .020 press fit. That is a huge anount of press if this tech was correct. I also had another guy tell me the same thing. The clip on the bottom is just for insurance. Stock H-D lower tree & stem are NOT meant to be disassembled. Many after-market trees are made differently & the stem can be removed.

why are you trying to disassemble that? .... that's my question.... there's no need to, if you're simply removing the trees.... ???

I am powder coating the trees is the reason I was trying to take um apart...but it does look like it is not meant to come apart, tried pressing from both ways and it dont want to move. I am sure it can be masked easy enought to powder coat though.

Thanks

listen, you don't have to go through all that.... but unfortunately, you DO have to go through removing your wiring harness for your controls.... but that's easier than disassembling the lower clamp from the stem...it's involved, but easier...trust me

remove, or pull back your tank.... pull the harness out from the steering neck.... unplug the controls....disassemble the delphi connectors...and pull them out through the neck and lower clamp....remove your front tire and fender and fork tubes....oh, and disassemble your front headlight...you gotta get everything out of the way in order to remove the triple clamps....it's a bit time consuming, but worth it if you really want to do what you want to do! ....

then, just take off the stem cap....it should just unscrew....and then unscrew the stem nut...and remove the retaining washer (it's bent- you'll see what i mean when you look at it....just unbend it and remove it)...then unscrew your "fall away" adjusting nut...and your triple clamps should be home free

if i've missed anything, chime in guys.... i know a bunch of you have done this

good luck..any questions....PM me!

Thanks jsbridge, but I think you might have misunderstood my question. I already have the triple trees off the bike..the fork stem is the part that connects the 2 triple trees together, unless I am not calling it by the right name, but that is the part I was speaking of. I am pretty sure now that Azgunner is correct and that there is no taking apart the stock hd part, I have tried with a 3 ton press and it will not move either way.

I dont see any reason why my powder coat guy will not be able to mask it to powder coat though, I just thought for sure when I was looking at it that it would come apart.

Thanks

ah, i see... yes, azgunner is right!.... sorry for misunderstanding you or interpreting your posts wrong... either way, your powder coat guy should really be able to get away with masking and spraying!

good luck, man!
