Quick windshield question....I'm about 6' tall. I have been riding my 06 SG for about five months now without a windshield. I like not having one but at times my eyes get to burning from riding and my neck hurts a bit. Especially if I ride very long. I really, really don't want a windshield due to the looks of it but....I think I need one for some rides. I want a detachable one so I can remove it quickly when I want to ride without it. I was thinking about one of the quick release compact windshield Harley has or some other brand. Question is, being six feet tall, will it do me any good? I don't care if I get a little wind around it, but don't want it shoving my head backward the whole time. Anyone have one of these and have an opinion to contribute?
I was never very fond of permanently mounted shields but as I got older (and colder) I found they had their place. I do a lot of highway riding so I settled on the Slipstreamer ss-32. It comes in 2 heights and I picked the shorter one and it does have a lot of adjustments. I picked this one because it's design also provides protection to my hands on cold mornings. I have gone with a 22in Slipstreamer ss-30 shield but I could never get it adjusted to get rid of the buffeting and the height was irritating. With Dynas you will encounter buffeting issues until you get them adjusted right. I modifed some other model Harley wind deflectors to help. Most of the time if you have mid controls the buffeting comes from the wind riding up your legs in combination with the low pressure created behind your windshield while moving at highway speeds. I found any way to reposition your feet- highway pegs, forward controls, crash bar with foot rests cuts down on buffeting a lot. The Jackflap vest in the sponsored link on the side helps stop the helmet lifting lift you encounter.
Find a local dealer that has a Memphis Shades measuring sheild. You can sit on your bike and then pick the right size - width and height.
Having said that I ended up getting a Memphis Shades Fats 21" that I ended up cutting down to about 15". The hardware on the forks isn't very noticable.
I'm like you -- I hate the way windshields look with out exception.
Since you're not buying the windshield for looks anyway, might as well get the shield that offers the most protection from the elements. What I'm sayin' is, don't get the smallest windshield in the hopes of getting better looks. Either way, the windshield will take away from the looks of the bike. So if you're sacrificin' looks, might as well get the other benefits - protection.
