Hi...How much post sale info is it possible to get from a vin? I bought a 2003 Wide Glide with some mods done. ie. V&H Big Shots, SE Breather etc. Is there a way to find out through Harley what has been done as far as service and modifications to this bike at the dealer? I have no idea the original dealer/owner/city or anything. Bought it from a guy here in Nova Scotia who brings back bikes from the Statesbuy the trailer load and he doesn't spend any time researching the bikes past. Only 8900 miles on it so I doubt there has been anthing done with the cam chain tensioners yet, but those are things it would be cool to find out without having to tear it down.
Sorry buddy, the VIN is not going to do you any good except to confirm the year, make and model. That being said is this guy stealing the bikes ? If not, then he has to have a Bill-of-Sale from the prior owner and based on your year model & milage you may get lucky and have a one owner bike. I would start from there and see where it takes you. If that doesn't work I think you know what your other options are. Good Luck.
If you can find the original dealer, they can check their records. Not sure if harley has a nation-wide computerized system for tracking service and maintenance on particular bikes like the car dealers do, but a check with your local dealer would tell you that. Just have your registration or proof of ownership so they know it's yours.
Thanks guys...The guy I bought it from buys several every trip in New Hampshire from the same guys, so unless I pester the fellas down there who get them from auctions and whatnot all up and down the east coast, my trail has gone cold. I did a carfax search and it isn't stolen so I'm fine that way. I was hoping that with the vin I could find the original dealer. No dip dot to referance.
I'm not sure if this is available in Canada but you could try Carfax or some service like that to get some information on the previous owners or have someone run a title search in NH (it's going to cost you though) to ID any previous owners. Once that information is in hand, you can contact the original owner for service information.
The problem with Carfax or the HD dealer system, is that they will only log car/bike dealer service information. Anyone doing their own maintenance or repair whill have no records that would be publicly available. I hope that this gives you some starting point.
