Mostly during the winter, sometimes when it's warm and I know I'm going to be sitting in traffic so my leg doesn't get fried.
But yeah, zipper is on the outside (I do wear fringe and fingerless gloves however, must go back to my stripper days or something LOL)

I never had any issue the with short zipper touching anything on the bike.
There was two problems with these chap though:
1)the elastic in the thigh is NOT neccessary, it makes the chaps too loose as the day wears on.
2)the leather is thin enough that it stretches over time at the boot opening. It finally stretched far enough that the chaps no longer fit tightly on the calf and boot and flap in the wind.
There are several advantages to these, including the price, but if you are going to wear them daily you would be better off buying a thicker, higher quality pair. These are 1 - 1.2 mm thick.
