I'm planning on riding from NC to WI for the 105th this August on my '07FXDC. I'm starting to think that it might be wise to put some cast wheels w/tubeless tires on the bike so I can plug a flat easy if I need to. Now, I've never been a real big fan of the look of cast wheels and I don't want to start a big thread on THAT topic. I just think spokes make MY bike look like I want it to look, kinda "retro" and that's just me. But, back to the real issue.
Am I being a wuss? Should I just grab a patch kit and hope for the best? I was thinking of finding some take-off wheels from an '07FXD and just using them for the August trip and maybe others...... I would consider investing in some wheels if I could find something that isn't too spendy and doesn't ruin (In My Opinion Only) the look of the bike. I could live with these, and the price seems relatively reasonable, but it doesn't look like HD is making a front one that will fit my bike.
So, I guess what I'm looking for from the group here are suggestions and maybe some pics?
Nine times outta ten a flat is gonna be on the rear. In addition, if you are gonna get loose spokes it will almost always be on the rear wheel. With that said, why not put a solid rear on the back and leave the front laced? Several models have came like that over the years. A 1200C wheel is chrome and will bolt right on. I have one on the back of my Road King.
I wouldget a new rear tire and tube just before the trip, take a cell phone and credit card......... then forget about getting a flat, just enjoy the ride.
In my opinion, if you like the looks of the spokes vs mags you won't be comfortable with your ride. Everytime you get off your bike, and look it over, you'll be seeing something you don't really like............. just saying.
Kinda like marrying a short, fat, brown eyed, brunette when what you wanted was a tall, thin, blued eyed, blonde....... just saying
Honestly, that's why I bought the bike with the mags. That and I hate cleaning spokes! [:'(] I NEVER have gotten a flat in town where there is lots of assitance. It's always away from home and usually in the boonies to boot. So, plug it, air it, and go. Just my .02 tho. Best of luck on your ride!

+1 on that Mike. I bought mine with mags for basically the same reasons, but do understand the attraction to spokes.
Thing is, if you receive a bad cut or puncture on either tub or tubless, you are screwed and will still need the cell and credit card.

That be true, but the likely-hood of that large of a hole is much less than just picking up a nail or screw. Of course, you could send your wheels to Woody's Wheels in CO and have him seal your spokes for you, making them tubeless. Or do a search on the web and find a do-it-yourself article. If I had spokes, that's what I'd do. If you need help with the sealer, let me know.

Doug has some good advice, years ago if you were stuck in the boonies, you were stuck, period!
Now, with technology, cell phones, blackberries, (and of course, the credit card) you could call or email from almost anywhere.
I'm just not sure why he had to get personal and bring my short, fat, brown eyed wife into the conversation........just saying![:@]
Oh yeah, I've got a set of 07 FXD rims in the basement.
Should you choose to go that way, make me an offer, I just haven't gotten around to put em on ebay yet.
