Default Lean or not?

I've downloaded my map for my power commander and I reset the TP and it all went well. Now how can I tell if I'm running lean or not?

Thanks in advance, Donnie

Check your spark plugs. Lean is white, very white. Your plugs should have a light gray or light tan ring around the insulator.

If your bike is running good with this new setup and you are getting no popping or backfiring then you are probably OK. The lean condition that you always hear about here usually involves long warm ups with popping, missing and dying. Checking your spark plugs is a good idea too.

Checking the plugs is a good idea, but it can be tough to get a good reading nowadays. Unleaded gas and ECMs that utilize spark knock sensors to retard timing can give misleading plugs reads. One of the best ways to check for a lean condition is to simply listen to the bike while you are riding it. Pay attention to the exhaust note throughout the rpm range. The sound should be consistant and the bike should pull strong all the way to the rev limiter. If you notice any flat spots or a certain RPM where the exhaust note seems to become a bit statacco, then you've probably got a lean spot. Also, a lean bike will often run a little hot.

Go to www.nightrider.com and read through the section on tuning a carb on the road. The concept is the same. Except you turn the dashpot instead of changing a jet. Much quicker, and your hands don't smell like fuel all day.
