Default Changing Grips

06 Street Bob here.

Alright, I did my due diligence on searching for answers, but, came up with not a whole lot...

I'm thinking of getting some cool grips for my handlebars but don't want to pay for installation. I just can't afford it right now. I have to install it myself or pass on the whole thing. I've read over the service manual instructions and definitely made a mental note of placing a shim behind the brake lever. Do you think this is doable for someone who so far has only 1) self-installed mufflers, high flow A/C and adjusted handlebars? Don't laugh. I'm probably not the least mechanically inclined of the bunch. I have the tools needed but I guess I need some glue. Any recommendations on that?

Basically, are there any tricky things that could screw me up that the manual doesn't mention?

Also, have any of you noticed that you roll the throttle accidentally when you pull firm on the front brake? Kind of defeats the purpose, no? [sm=bangbang.gif]

Thanks for your help, as always...

yeah did mine in about 15 mins. all you need to do is seperate the switch housing. I cut the left grip off with a razor, sprayed some windex in the new grip and slid it on. the windex is alchohol based so everates quickly, the throttle grip is a little more tricky but easy enough. just like the left side sepearte the housing then took a pair of needle nose and lifted the cable up and slid it out. be careful because the bead falls of the cable. just watch where it rolls off to so you can put it back on. than slide the new grip in place attch the throttle cables and place the housing back together.

Grips are phairly easy. You shouldn't have a problem with them. Ican't remember what their called right now..... been drinking a bit..... but the little metal retaining pieces at the ends of the cable, that slip into the throttle grip can be a booger, and be careful not to lose one. They can and will phall off.

Most grips will come with grip glue. Clean up the bars very well before putting the new grip on. Slide it on quick and smooth.

Yeah Whiff, you can do this one. Just take your time on it. 4 hands would be better than 2, so maybe employ one of your kids to help. I dropped one of those ferecules ( or whatever you call them ) inside the housing. That took most of my time putting on my new grips, fishing that damn thing out ( about 30 minutes. would have it to the top & drop it again ). Just remember to loosen up your throttle & idle cable all the way before you start the throttle side. That is what I did. I used to the manual to help me reset it back up, as harleys are a little different than my old metric bikes, in which the grip goes insided the housing. If you dont have the manual, let me know & i'll scan the section about throttle adjustment & e'mail it to you in pdf form.

Later,
Chap

This is the very reason I love these forums. Unless I missed this while reading over the manual last night (a big possibility) I wouldn't have thought of this. Thanks Chapds. It's these stupid little things that can screw you up.
