Default OEM Forward Controls Installed

So I decided to give the installation a try myself. I did plenty of reading (here and elsewhere). I even made myself a little primary drive locking tool for about $2. The Stealer wanted close to $70 CAD for the same tool with a HD logo on it.

The install was way more involved than I thought. Off comes the battery, starter, primary cover, primary case and all the existing shifter and rear brake linkages. I started the job last night and worked 4 hours. Tonight I finished her up in another 2 hours for a total of 6. The dealer wants 4 hours for about $500 CAD (just labor). The bottom line is if you have a little mechanical aptitude and take your time, you can do it too (insert disclaimer here).

Anyone who claims they can do the job in 30 minutes is either nuts or isn't doing it properly "by the book".

I would definitely recommend having the shop manual at your finger-tips.

Anyway, I thought I would share my experience with all of you in case you're thinking about tackling this job yourself.

And, as an added bonus, for the cost of shipping, I can make a few more primary drive lock tools for anyone who's interested. I've got enough material left for about 4 more. Just PM me. First come, first served

Bill.

I don't believe Harley has any blackedout mounts phor the phorward controls. Only the chrome kits. You would have to have the levers and mounts powder coated somewhere. I think it would be worth it, but I haven't gotten around to it.

phootboards? I think it would look like duck pheet on a Dyna with phorward controls. Probably passable with mids.

I have installed the forward controls on my '04 in an hour, thats removing the mids and installing the forwards. On my '06 my brother and I changed the forwards from my '04 to the '06 and the thing I had to change was the shifter rod from the original to the '06 shifter rod.

I must be missing something. 4 hours to install forward controls? Removal of the "battery, starter, primary cover, primary case." A lot has changed from 05 to 06 for all that to be required. You were just putting on forward controls right? I am glad I didn't have all that to go through. I changed out the rear break linkage and installed the cap over the original shifter spline and that was about that plus a few other things, but I didn't have to remove ANY covers. Did you take out the original shifter spline?

You're right, anything up to the 2006 model year should take an hour or less. No primary to remove, all connections are external to the primary. Starting in 2006, the forward controls were rerouted and installation now includes having to remove the outer primary, not so easy anymore. Did the forwards on my '04 and it took no time at all. 2006 and up, much more involved.

Thanks for that DGlide!

I thought I was losing my mind or something...

The Bob is my first Harley so I had no idea what the install was like for anything prior.
