I started my bike this morning and put it in first, started moving, did not even get into third and the engine idlereal high, I put it in first and stopped and it stayed reved up for a couple more seconds and then dropped down to normalidle. This is an 08 Superglide, last night I connected the wires to the battery for the slime air compressor but Idont seehow that would affect it,Any ideas what happened?
Idle speed is controlled by two things, your EMC idle settings, and your throttle position. You can check your throttle position as follows:
1. Loosen both throttle cable adjustment nuts (on the cable up by where the cables come off your handlebars).
2. Tighten the open cable until 100% throttle position just starts to tough the throttle stop on your throttle body. You should be able to hear the metal on metal when rolling on the throttle to 100%.
3. One #2 is complete, adjust the idle cable until the cable just starts to put a little bit of pressure on the sprint in the cable holder by your throttle body.
If you still have idle speed issues after verifying the cable adjustment then you could look at your ECM. This requires a computer, the race tuner (or some other tuning system). With the race tuner, you set base idle speed based on temperature. The colder it is the higher you want the engine to idle thus increasing engine temp. 1000 should be the lowest you set this once the engine is warmed up.
How high was the rpm? On some cooler mornings, less than 60 degrees, mine will idle around 1200 for 15-20 seconds and then drop to 700-800. I think the new Harleys idle too high anyway.

1000 RPM is spec for the low-end. I would not suggest dropping much lower than that as it won't provide enough electricity, and can be rough on the bottom end. With that said, when my bike is hot, I seat my ECM (per Doc's advice) to idle at like 960... but I think if you dropped idle to 7-800, you'd be asking for problems.

eric, when you say 1000 RPM is spec for the low-end.
Where is that spec from???
I can't speak for Eric and where he came up with his information, and the information which I am supplying is for a carbed Twinky. Service Manual states for Idle Speed.....

Thanks, ericsenf - you made me plug it in and double check. It kicks off at 1400 and drops to around 980 after 20 seconds. I feel better.
I don't know what my idle speed is,but the bike has efi and I wish there were some way I could get it to idle just a little slower where it sounds like it's about to sputter then picks up and keeps going with a pop and a bang once in a while!
I am set 1000 rpm at idle when hot. The sound from the 96ci to 103ci is night and day when it comes to idle sound. The 103ci is old time Harley sound. I am up about 1400 when cold.
