Default Loud shifting?

I just picked up my new bike last night. Well, it's a new one, but a 07 Dyna Custom. Anyway, I've had 4 rice burners in the past and this is my first Harley. I'm happy with it but I need to get used to the different sounds. On Jap bikes the transmissions shift so smooth but this Harley shifts with a distinctive clunk both up and down. I mean it shifts fine just a little louder than I'm used too. Is this normal?

That's perfectly normal. Most Harley riders love that distinctive clunk. It's part of the (God, I hate this word) "mystique" of Harley-Davidson.

Yeah, it's normal. But some have commented that by changing oil types this noise can be reduced or eliminated.

you can quiet it with 75 w 90 gear grease or some use (80 w 145 i believe) is the proper weight

you can eliminate almost all of the clunks. only one that is hard to get rid of is the initial neutral to first early in the morning when the bike is still cold. it is still there when bike is warmed up, just not as loud.

I cant wait to try it then!! I hate that damn noise; it sounds cheap. I have noticed that mine has become a bit louder at 8000 miles.

Thanks JRK5892

The Clunk is NOT bad. It is the sound of a Harley . Even if I could get rid of it I wouldn't.If I wanted a quiet bike I would have bought a metric.
