Painting over chrome
I know what your thinking, why would anyone paint over chrome?
I like the all black look, so I'm painting parts of my bike. Anyone have an experience painting over chrome? I have read some things online, and have bought some DuPont painting products.
Any tips?

sand it sand it sand it... 400 grit sand paper... self etching primer... paint... allow it to CURE... you have to make sure you prep right... as i have said many times... i would recomend epoxy appliance paint over dupnt black all day long
Yeah listen to what Joe tells ya! He wouldn't steer ya wrong, like he sez its all in the prep work. These strut covers were chrome. Bead blasted, etch prime, then painted. Been holding up for a while now with no probs.

Whats parts are you talking about? Some people would trade black motor covers and maybe a little cash for your chrome ones. The stupid parts like ac cover, horn cover, battery band etc., you can paint those without kicking yourself.
why wouldn't a guy?
when in doubt, black it out

What would be the best way to do heat sheilds? What is the paint that you would suggest? JRK i have read a lot of your stuff and like what you have done with your bike. Thanks for all the good advice and the inspiration
best way is to have them powder coated, which JRK does also, man of many hats. I know that some have used High Heat spray paint, personally I would pay the extra for the powder coat. I wish you luck whatever way you go.
+1
if you do paint them... scuff them up agian wiht 400 gritt... then shoot them with heat paint... make sure it is the 1200* NOT the 500*... 1200* is the one you want... do not clear after you shoot them it just flakes off...
personally i am a fan of coating heat shields rather than painting them... but hey $$$ does not always agree with that and a can of heat paint and some sand paper is def cheaper... as with any paint.. prep prep prep... take your time dont rush it and you will be golden!
