Very easy process. I just changed mine to a wrinkle black backplate. I'm running an open K&N filter. The backplate made a much bigger difference (in appearance) than I had imagined. Of course the standard answer is to get the service manual (really for torque values). Other than that it's just a matter of loosening bolts and tightening bolts. Nothing really special other than using Locktite and torquing 'em down.
Hey Doug,
Thanks for replying, I thought it was pretty easy. I just installed an air cleaner insert and removing the football cover. When I noticed the backplate has been worn by the elements, so I want to go back with a chrome one to match the insert. I will post pic's later tomorrow.
Here's a dumb question on the subject... With this setup (very cool looking by the way), how does water affect performance? (rain/washing etc) Do you have to put a "sock" on it or something...?
To be honest with you I don't know, I just installed it a few days ago. I don't ride in the rain or if it looks like rain. I'll wait for a better day, now for washing it I will put a plastic bag or something over it.
i have a sock i use in the rain to cover it... a rain sock that is... but never had any issues... like hte mod man... i think i am going to pull mine and hit it with some black powder... liking that idea...
