Did chrome sliders on my 04 Wide Glide. Was pretty easy to do once I fabricated a jig to hold the assembly and hold / release the spring with a chunk of threaded rod. Took longer to fabrivate jig than it did to do the job. No spring launch at all. Took 1 hour for first leg, then 30 minutes for the second one. Be sure to have the manual handy and clean everything real good prior to re-assembly. I changed all the bushings and seals while in there.
If you want, I can get you more details on how to rig a jig like I did. Rest is right out of the manual.
you need some special tools, the long alan wrench, the fork seal tool. I was thinking of doing mine myself(my brother in law has a mechanic shop), but when a local indy said they would do it for 50 euros, I had to jump at that. Check your local indy shops, get some quotes. just my .02
HERE is a link that helped me a great deal on my 06 Wide Glide. I bought a Sears yellow lift and new tools for less than the stealer wanted to charge me. The work is done, looks great, and I still have my new tools and lift. If you choose to do them on the bike (no holding jig needed), be sure to leave the front fender on until you break loose the bottom 12mm allen bolts. The entire job took me about two hours.
Be sure to have on hand ('06 and up):
12mm allen wrench
PVC pipe for driving fork seals
1-3/8" socket for the fork tube caps
