I ordered the controls yesterday. Still want to do the whole job per instructions so maybe I can learn some stuff about my bike. It seems to me that alot of people have just cut the shaft and called it a day. I guess I will see. Im sure once I get started if I hit a rough spot I can just post a pic and someone will help. By the way when I ordered the part I asked how hard of an install and they said they would rate it 4 out of 5. I hope its not as hard as that.

Unless you have at least minimal experience tearing down a motorcycle engine and/or transmission, I would strongly urge you NOT to tackle this if you plan to pull the primary case. Pay them to do it or otherwise, do it the way I'm planning to: leave the primary intact and just cover and secure the mid shifter.

For those of you that have cut the shaft on the install I have a ? It seems to me that the big deal in this install is pulling out all the guts of the inner primary. Removing the outer primary cover is not hard. What if I pulled the outer cover, then could I cut the shaft and then would the shaft just slide out? Then I could plug holes with the kit ones and re install outer. Or is this just wishful thinking and Im in for a long weekend. Atleast next weekend is a 4 day weekend.

i don't think that would work as not enough room to pull the rest of the shaft out the back side of the inner primary. The guys that are cutting the shaft are cutting it off right where it comes out the back of the inner primary then pulling the rest out the front. I looked into doing this over the weekend and it can be done but dam looks like a pain in the a ss not sure what people are using other than a hack saw blade and some time.

OMG, whatever you don't do that! Even if you could get a saw blade on the shaft with the primary chain still on there, you'll have metal sawdust all in the chain from cutting that shaft. Even if you take extra care you can't be sure some fine metal dust doesn't get in there. You could very easily wind up trashing your primary chain and/or the clutch.

You really need to let the pros do this if you insist on doing it "by the book" and pulling the primary.

Default Part #

The part number for the cap is 34640-93 and the set screw is 3231B - no, the cover does not come with a set screw! I believe the cap is around $18, but don't hold me to that price.

the good thing about pre 06 is there is no need to go into the primary(kit came with a cap for the shaft)... the good thing about 06+ is you can get a kuryakyn kit and there is no need to go into the primary. The bad thing about going into the primary is the chance that you will need an impact wrench to get the damn compensator nut off(I did.. thank god for my tool happy brother in law). Other than that, removing the inner primary is a cake walk.
