Since I just bought a set of chrome fork lowers off ebay, I was thinking about the trees since they're aluminum and without an enclosed space to park my bike have already started oxidizing.
I was surprised to find that HD does not have a replacement chrome tree kit. I even looked in the softail section. Let me rephrase, HD does not have a chrome 49mm replacement kit. They do have a kit for 41mm forks. Does me no good.
So I found a set of chrome trees on ebay. Accutronix 49mm +3 degree rake chrome trees for $250. I wasn't looking to add any rake unless I do one of those front end kits, preferably from chopper-kits.com, and I seriously lack the $2k+ to do it. With +3 deg., would I still be ale to utilize the stock sliders? 3 deg doesn't sound like a lot but I'd think stretching it out just a bit might cause some functionality issues, specifically regarding handling.
My other choices were to have the stock aluminum trees chromed or polished. I'm sure it's cheaper. I have access to a chromer within a mile of my house. I haven't really seen his workmanship to say if he's good or not. Talking to a local indy who does build some custom bikes said his quality is not that good, and he (the indy, who is about 20 miles away) will send stuff out to get chromed. He didn't say who he uses.
i agree with you on the polish trees, mine started fading and getting spots on my streetbob also. so this is what i did,i did put on new wdg triple trees because i wanted them on my bike. but they were also polished aluminum. so i sent them out and had them chrome plated (upper and lower trees for 125.00). the down time was two weeks, but it was well worth the wait. they look totally awesome. and well i re-installed them i decides to put chrome sliders on also, that i bought off ebay new for 100.00. so i changed my whole front end into chrome for 250.00 total.
so instead of buying a new front end, just send your trees out and get them chromed and new chrome sliders.i sent my trees to chromemasters in tenn., i will see if i have there webste still and i will post it if i find it. jackyl
Thank you very much Jackyl. I think that is who (chrome masters) the indy uses. I remember him mentioning it now. Price sounds right and if you used them and the indy uses them and say they have good quality, I'll take your word for it.
You will have to reseat the bearings on the bottom of the tripple tree . I know that my dealer have chrome exchange you give them yours and they will give you one back plus a fee
