I'm out riding my 08 Dyna FXDL and stopped by the local watering hole for a few. So I go to leave, put the key in the ignition, lights come on..but when I pushed the starter ..NOTHING. I notice my bike alarm did not deactivate when I got near my bike, so I'm thinking the alarm system or the battery in the alarm fob is bad. I checked that and all looked okay because I recently changed the fob battery. So I'm thinking, damn a 2008 Dyna with 5500 miles and now this crap. So just for ****s and giggles I check the fuse box. I pull out a fuse and noticed the white powedery stuff on the fuse prongs..dand I know thats corrosion. So, I start checking each fuse and the second 15-amp fuse I pull was blown! I swap it out with another fuse and I hear the chip of the alarm system and the bike starts up.
The safety tip of the day is, "Check you fuse box for corrosion and don't get stranded".
I wonder why Harley went to fuses rather than the circuit breakers they have had for years....
Believe it or not, circuit breakers get weaker the more they have to work. I'd rather use a fuse personally. Yes, circuit breakers are quite a bit easier to reset while on the road, but once a CB blows, it will blow at a lower level next time, and so forth. Not a huge amount mind you, when comparing event to event, but quite a bit when comparing first event to whatever you might consider the last event.
I bought some CRC Electri-clean and sprayed the fuse bax then out electrical grease on each blade of the breaker and reinstalled. When I sprayed with cleaner a bunch white stuff came out.
I did every elec connection i have with the grease. That way i dont have the problems i had on my old yamaha of chasing elec problems all over the bike from having lost connections from corrosion
