+1 habit, but I think good practice...read somewhere where a new owner hit the switch and the bike lurched forward thru his garage door

I pull the clutch when I start no matter what Ive parked it in. Just in case.

I have seen someone standing next to a bike in gear...hit start without the clutch, the bike jumped and the jiffy stand came up......down went the bike

ouch

I have an 06 Street Bob. Trust me, always pull in the clutch there is NO safety disengage.

IN Gear = she will buck hard and maybe down you go as in my case where the bike landed on my ankle!

There's a reason for that little switch under your clutch handle on the newer bikes.

Well my bike is a 2009 FXD and it got no safety switch. Personally I wish it would but it definitely doesn't have one.

Hmm, interesting read. I always have the bike in neutral with the green light on, but I've never held the clutch in...I also thought the '09 model had a safety switch and wouldn't start in gear w/o the clutch in.

Maybe i should start holdin' the clutch in just to be safe.

I do a little bit of both, if im in the driveway wrenching on it I know its in neutral cause I roll it out of the garage, if I'm out riding and then jump on the bike after I have stopped i get on the bike and pull the clutch in...My 82 has a "N" but sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't, better safe then sorry
