When i bought my bike the dealer threw in a half shell which is a very nice helmet actually. After riding on the freeway for long periods of time, i'd get off the bike and my ears would be ringing, and also since it's spring in so cal, all the bugs are out. So i went and bought a full face with a smoked out lense for going on long rides/trips.
Whats everyones opinion on the riding a Harley with a full face???
I'm only 25 and don't really want to be put in the old man category yet. It sure would be nice to take a spin around town without a helmet on once in a while. I have to say that after going on a 500 mile round trip with the full face on, it was worth it's weight in gold. Everytime i stopped to get gas of to put on more clothes or take some off due to the weather change i had to spend 5 minutes cleaning the bugs off my helmet. I stopped once and found a huge butterfly stuck to the front of my helmet.
Full Face - I wear on long highway rides and the middle of winter. I wear this one the least.
3/4 Helmet with face shield - I wear on the highway and on longer rides. I also wear this one at night with my regular glasses. It is cold outside I wear this one too.
Half shell - This is my favorite. I wear it with my prescription sunglasses. I wear it for around town and most back road riding. I almost always wear this one when it is hot outside.
As for wearing a helmet with a Harley. I know what you mean. Most Harley riders around this area do not wear helmets. I personally think it is important for my wife and I (she always wears a full face as does my daughter) to wear helmets. To each their own.
I like to hear people say wear what you want, and I will.
I like the look of the half the best, but I always hear about the noise. I've tried a half shell on, but didn't like the fit. I like none except on the freeway, but I haven't been able to do that for years. I hate a full face on me or anyone else, but I have a full face and a 3/4. The 3/4 is best for me. It cuts the ear noise, and I can still talk and see. However, I've been wearing the full face to work, until I get my windshield put together. I learned with my last bike that with a windshield I don't have to worry about bugs, rocks, or the wind ripping my 3/4 to the back of my head.
It's funny. I notice more bikers wave when you don't have a full face helmet on.
