Looking down at the shock, the spanner wrench would be turned "clockwise", to increase preload. You would feel or hear a click when the next setting is reached. The investment for the wrench is worth it.

The shock spanners are all basically the same, mine is a PS one..I have standard SB shocks and to adjust them harder you turn them clockwise if your looking at the bike from the rear.I carry a passenger most of the time and have them set on setting 4..think theres 5 settings. If you use the spanner carefully it won't mark the chrome but if your worried just put a rag between the spanner and the shock.
Does the spanner scratch the shock? I recently purchased one and I'm worried it will mar the finish.
I was worried about the same thing. Just be careful with it and it won't hurt anything. I used one on my old stock shocks and on my new progressives and never got a scratch.

My spanner I got from HD doesn't look like that. It's a U-shape.
Just did mine the other night. As you face the bike, turn the collar on the bottom of the shock from right to left, to increase the preload. Used a "C" shaped spanner meant to adjust the shocks on a Sportster, and it worked fine. Looks like it came through from the factory on the lowest preload setting.
I am courious where my is sat at now -I think it feels stiff and that may make sence the guy that owned the bike b4 me was a BIG guy so I am not sure if any adjustments were made for him
