Default Petcock Question

Should I always turn my petcock lever to the "off" position, or only when I am done riding for the day/night and it will be sitting for a while? I have always wondered about that. And what can happen if I never turn it off? Any info is appreciated, thanks guys.

Yes always turn it off. It will cause fuel to contaminate your oil. Harley owners manual states this.

I always upgrade my petcock to a Pingle or Ness because I always turn off the gas and wear the dang things out! Its never a bad idea to shut it off even if you don't need to.

I always turn mine to the off position just in the event that the diaphram feature and float decide to fail at the same time and wash out the combustion chambers with gas. Ever been on a two stroke running wide open with a crankcase flooded with gas. Talk about WOT!

Rare instance that I put the petcock to the "off" position.

Yeah I'm sure it's a good idea to turn it to off, but the only time I turn it off is when I go from on to Reserve and it has to pass through off on the way.

Actually I do turn it to off when it starts snowing and I know I won't be riding for a while.

I turn mine off all the time; I have a Pingle as well...the stock one's have a vacuum diaphram that opens when the engine "pulls"...if your Pingle is like mine it is just a valve.

One more time consuming step in the starting process,eh? (Along with my manual comp releases).
