Default Front end Install...need help(pics added)

I'm putting a front end off a '07 fxdb on my (gulp)
sportster. The front was taken apart for shipping.
Does the "spanner" nut for the stem go
UNDER the top tree? The top tree has a big chamfer
or countersink and it appears that it then seats on the
"spanner" nut.
The reason I ask is if I flip the tree over and put it
on first, chamfer side up, the nut can also be put on with it's taper side down.
Or if someone can confirm which side of the top tree
has a small bolt in it on the tank side? Possibly for
a brake line clamp?
Sportster uses a pinch bolt type set-up on the top tree
so I can't compare.
Thanks

Rider's right has a small hex screw in the back of the tree for holding the front brake line.

Yes, the "spanner" nut for the stem does go
UNDER the top tree.

That is IF... by "spanner" nut you mean the adjusting nut, aka the "star" nut, which has a serated ring around one end. It's used for adjusting pressure on the bearings. Install it with the serations up.

The top tree is installed on top of the bearing adjuster nut. The big chamfer on the under side of the top tree DOES seat into the "spanner" nut to hold the pressure on the bearings. The chamfer also alows enough clearance for accessing the adjusting nut for setting the proper 'Fall Away'.

The washer under the fork stem nut (which goes on top of the top tree) is a special hardened material. Never replace this washer (part # 45727-08) with a common flat washer.

The only 'small bolt' on the top tree (tank side) of my 08 Fat Bob is for
a brake line clamp AND a ground wire to the handle bar assenbly.

I really like the sound of your project and since you've come to the Dyna pages for help with your Sportster you must now post pics for us all to admire.

Thanks for the info, could you please explain "fall away"?

As for picks heres a few before shots with the 39mm narrow glide and a 21".

And here's with the 49mm mid glide and the 21" sorry bars not on yet still mocking up.

Here's what I'm shooting for. A 130-16, still working on
lacing the rim. Yes I know it's not perfectly centered.
Can ya feel me?

Here's a few front shots, before and after. Compare headlight width to fork width.

That's freakin' awsome! I like the oil tank & altitude stick. Your gonin' to love that 130 front tire, & the 49mm forks will look bad as... #*&%.

Fall Away is a final / 'as assembled' adjustment.

Apply anti-seize to the fork stem threads & tighten the star nut (before installing the top tree) until there is no lateral movement in the lower tree. I like snugging it down pretty good to seat the bearings then back it off a little. Install the top tree, the special washer & fork stem nut. The anti-seize helps to allow future Fall Away adjustments.

Finish the assembly, raise the front wheel & turn it straight ahead. Tap the front wheel to one side with your hand until the front end Falls Away under gravity. Do the same in the other direction.

The front end should fall away @1-2" on each side from the center position.

Nice work - Always great to see a project come together - I had some fun over the rainy summer and put a 07 FXDB 49mm fork set-up on my 01 fxd (same forks as your sporty).

I'm eventually going with the 130 tire as well but for now went with a stock wheel and tire so I could enjoy some riding. Over the winter planning on re-lacing the stock wheel with a 16 or maybe an 18 inch by 3 inch wheel to run the tire.

I remember asking those questions too... star nut up star nut down....

At the end of the day you can take pride in knowing your bike a little better now.

Keep posting updates with pics!

George

Dead in the water.
I ordered an aftermarket axle kit. Package says mid-glide but
it measures wide-glide length. Maybe it's the metric (Tiawan)
conversion.

Did you know the 08-10 Dynas have metric axles, 25mm. The 06-07 have 1" axles.

I will have a 1" mid-glide axle available around next weekend if you want it.

Let me know.

Nice work! Now I couldn't help but notice you seem to be a tad short on storage. Being the kind of guy that likes to help others I would be glad to take that red space taker off your hands so you have room to put up shelves for additional storage space. Let me know when you want me to pick it up. Actually I better ask, 69 or 70? I prefer the 70 so I would need to know that before i drive over to get it.
