Windvest Shield - first impression
Finally got a chance to test it out today. Not for long but it was over 80 here yesterday and somewhere around 60 today so I thought I'd give it a try. I'm not a windshield lover and, as soon as spring arrives, the shield, as much as I am impressed by it, is coming off. But, unlike my HD QD windshield, I like the looks and performance of the windvest enough to leave it on the bike for the winter. It's not quick-detachable but it is very easy to take off and put back on, and even easier if you just remove the 2 crossbar screws and remove the shield and leave the ring mounts on. But, while I wouldn't go as far to say the shield compliments the lines of the bike, it doesn't hurt it much in my opinion and it's very effective for it's size and height. While riding, I stuck my hand out in front of me just behind the shield, per the instructions, and slowly moved it up until I could feel where the wind was being directed. And it was throwing it up right over the top edge of my helmet. With my QD windshield, I had to adjust it up on the forks as high as it would go to get that effect. And the top edge of the shield was always catching my eyes. With the windvest, my eyes are several inches above the top of the shield so it's not so distracting.
Bottom line, I really like it. It will make the difference, on some cooler days between deciding to take the cage or the bike.
Bberck, I think you would have had better results, as you said, if you could have adjusted the shield up a bit on your risers.
In my previous thread, someone asked how it attaches. I think there are at least 2 mounts available. One has rings that attach to the risers, if you have any, and the other has rings that mount to the crossbar/handlebar. Mine has the riser rings. I took it apart because I re-engineered the rubber inserts (sorry bberck, had to do it) as these rings are for 1.5" risers and mine are 1.25". So, I snapped a few pix as I was reassembling.
Here is how the rings attach to the risers (2 pix):

Then the crossbar attaches to the rings with 1 bolt on each side:

And then the shield mounts to the crossbar with 2 bolts on each side:

Dont blame you on the rubber strips LOL
I had planned to redo them if I was going to keep it but that was the only thing I had to hack up in the garage the night i did it.
After buying my QD windshield and paying $350 for it only to dread ever putting it on the bike and it just sitting in my barn, I never would have paid that and more to take a chance on the Windvest. Once again, this forum pays off. And you got a nice warm jacket liner out of the deal so we'll both be warmer this winter in our own way.
