Default 2000 Super Glide Charging problem

My friend has a 2000 Superglide and is experiencing a problem that could be either the starter relay or stator. He ask me to help him trouble shoot it but I don't have a service manuel . I will be checking all the connections first and then proceeding from there. The way he described the problem is it is running off the battery and after it sets for a couple of days he has to charge the battery or jump the bike to start.
Anyone with info on this problem and the best way to diagnose it is most appreciated.

Do a load test on the battery. Might just need a new battery.

If it's the original or a battery more than 5 years old, a new battery may be in order. When you get the bike started and warmed up, with a mutimeter check DC voltage across the battery with bike idling, should be 13.1-13.2 vdc at a rpm of 2500 the voltage should be 14.2-14.5 vdc. There is a more involved test for the stator mentioned in reply #3. If you take the derby cover off or the chain inspection cover (little oblong cover) and smell something burnt it's probably a stator.

I had the same prob with my 2001 FXD. It turned out to be the stator. If he keeps charging or jumping it and the battery keeps dying completely, it will totally burn up the stator and eventually the bike will die on the road. He will also need a new battery with the new stator.

Once your friend gets his bike up and running, let him know Kuryakyn makes a neat little voltage meter that monitors the voltage level on the bikes electrical system. Two wires one ground and the other to an always on wire, i.e. tail lamp or headlamp wire. Can probably find it on J&P cycles or Dennis Kirk sites. I got them stuck on the side of my front brake master cylinder of my bikes.
