This has been discussed recently. Do a search in the Dyna forum for 'metmachex' and you will find half-a-dozen threads.

I did one a few years back & is still on my bike but not the one you are asking about:

If the customers would find my products of value I would proceed in manufacturing a 3 pound swingarm that is much stronger than the OEM steel swingarm. I just do not see that HD owners see the value in performance products.

Is that a carbon fiber swingarm? Did you manufacture that? Is it part carbon fiber part fiberglass? We do drive shaft for cooling towers from composite materials.

Howard is teasing you! That is also a carbon-fibre wheel....

Howard, what are we looking at cost-wise for this three pound performance swingarm?

Default costs associated with

  1. This is pre-preg C/F. You put it in a mould (limy spelling for you GRBrown..hee he) and than bolt it together than put the mould & pre-Preg material into a autoclave (like a pressure cooker @ 450*c).
  2. This is my mould for the 16" bagger wheels. It cost $16,000 to make it.
  3. The wheel is made than the metal material is than bolted into the already allotted solid mounting points.
  4. The swing arm would be engineered the same way. As an example, the aluminum hubs on the wheel above weigh much more than the C/F. The total wheel weight is 4.2 lb (F) & 4.7 lb (R). I engineered these wheels to withstand 1,300 lb weight limit for the baggers. With light weight wheels/tires your bike starts, stops, and transitions much faster than you are use to. It is easier to start or stop a light weight wheel than a heavy one.
  5. To answer the original question, I would guess you would have at least $25K into the project to get the first one out of the box.
  6. I wish I could interest Harley riders to see the value in performance and less into Gremlin bells and heavy wide tires with skinny front wheels a more into motorcycles that run and ride well. But that is just me. And BTW this is a real C/F frane and weighs in at 7 lbs complete. Man, how those 26" front & 360 rear would look with blinkity LED's that would transform this bike into looking like a jelly fish at 10,000 feet!

Default More C/F

BTW the front brake rotors are C/F also. They stop berry berry good but sound like sand paper when stopping. They go for $900/ea and are available for immediate shipping just in case you guys want something to buy while you are waiting for your swing arm. BTW they do not need heat to work and they grab much better than Iron rotors.
