Oven cleaner or bug and tar remover. Just try not to get any on the bike itself. Repolish the pipes after you clean them. Brake cleaner works to but will take paint off so be careful.

000 steelwool...sometimes a razor to start with the big pieces followed by the steelwool, works real well!

I start with a stiff piece of plastic - like an old gift card. Plastic won't scratch so I can usually scrap all the big stuff off. Then hit it with Never Dull, using the card again anytime I feel a bump.

Works great and doesn't risk damaging anything. Takes a bit more elbow grease but I wont take a chance with the more caustic stuff near my paint.

If there is a lot, heat the pipes up first. Then use a wet paper towel or J-Cloth to get most of it or thined out. Once it's cooled down a bit, (it can still be warm, works good this way as well) take some Nevr-Dull pads and wipe it down.

I tried the razor blade trick once and ended up with some small scatches to the pipes. Another good product is Goo-Gone and Autosol.

Yes - a heel plate which I'm just in the process of making to keep my size nines off the pipes. I'm fed up of cleaning the things, but I'm quite lucky in that I use a few solvents in my job and use a diluted solution of those which shifts the marks but they're still tough to shift
