When I used throw overs I put the supports on to prevent the bag end that is to the rear from falling in toward the wheel. I thought it looked a pit sloppy if the bags weren't even, gives you a support bracket that the bags could be tied down to at the rear so they wouldn't flop around, and prevented uneven tension on the yoke. On the picture in Nick's post almost all of the weight of the bags is on the strap of the yoke that is toward the front. Nick, your bags are on as right as they can be currently, but you may want to consider relocating your turn signals so that you can slide the bags further toward the rear so they aren't resting against the shock and install bag supports.

I put those front fork bags on each side of the rear fender braces. For most riding that gives me some storage for small stuff.

When I go on a tour they act as supports for the saddle bags. At $20 each they cost a fraction of the factory support rails. They hold the bags out from the shocks and parallel to the bike.

Small picture but they show up on the rear fenders supports on the Lowrider.

You can not see them in this shot but it shows the saddle bags out from the shocks on my Street Bob loaded up to go to Sturgis.

Yes...I have a cheapo pair of leather bags but I do not have them on normally. When I put them on, I just throw them over the fender under the seat and tie them to the shock spring and ride. They don't rub on any moving parts.
