was in a harley dealership today and met a couple enroute to a vacation hot spot. their left bag came off the street glide. everything went all over the road and everyone on the high way managed to run over every bit of it. Iphone looked like it was shot with a shot gun.
so the bag will take 6 - 8 weeks to get since it's black, and the couple is out everything that was run over.
WTF is going on with these bags and why are they falling off.
I think I'm going to drill a hole in mine and tie wrap it to the frame.
I took the stock "quick release" pins out of mine, and replaced the entire set up with some bolts, flange nuts, and they don't come off. Was a beotch taking them off, putting them on, while I went through some trouble on a trip in June. However, I don't have to worry about losing a bag to a pothole or thieves (well, both would have to work much harder to make me lose a bag).
I have a Brother who had his bag fall off the other day...TWICE!!!! Second time was funny as F@&K because it was already damaged.
The pin groove on the end was bent a little bit so he bought all new pins and also zip tied the bags with heavy duty ties. He zip tied them from the bracket that the lid hooks on to the bracket that the pin attaches to.
I also have my bags on bolted on instead of the pins.
Alot of solutions have been posted as to how to keep this from happening, either falling off or getting stollen...do a search and you should find them...personally the looks and security of the outside saddlebag rails outweight the much cooler looker yet less protection of the S.G. style. Amazing how heavy those bags are when they are loaded. Hope it never happens to you...
Maybe the guy didn't securely fasten the bag last time he had it off the bike...I've never had a bag fall off and I always make sure it is securely fastened when I reinstall it on the bike.
Remove the worthless pins go to hardware store get nuts with nylon lock inside, bolts and washers
and you have fixed the problem along with adding another layer of "security" to them.
The bolts work good to hold them on and for security at night, etc. However I have ridden for years and never lost a loaded bag...and know tons of other guys that have ridden for years and never lost a bag. I know it can happen, but its my opinion that when it does, the rider did not properly secure the twist pin. Those things can fool you if you don' t take your time and confirm that they are properly seated. I just believe a lot of these "bag drops" are operator error.
Although I have never lost a bag, when I removed the chrome guards I put a clip nut and bolt in place of the front Zeus fastener. I have a stubbly 1/2 racheting wrench in the bag. It takes 30 seconds to remove the bag instead of 20 seconds. They will never fall off.
