Default Bolt sizing?

Complete newb questions and yes I should probably not be near a Harley Davidson with a wrench!

I am mounting a Ness fairing using the Kuryakyn (Sp?) turn signal relocation kit. The bolts that came with it are too short and I will need to find some longer ones. While I will be able to figure out the length I will need, does anybody know what the thread sizing/count (is that even the right way to ask?) is I need to get. Same issue with the bolt that mounts the headlight (goes up into the block that the headlight is mounted to on a 2006 Streetbob). I will need to get a longer one as I am adding the Ness head light relocation kit.

Yes even I am shaking my head reading this post, but at least I'm trying (and learning)!

Go to your local hardware store. If you can't find an employee that knows the size of the bolts, they'll at least have a gauge that will tell you.

Dave, could you post some images of the reloc kit and some dimensions? Where are you going to relocate the sigs to?

This info will certainly help us to give you a good advise....

Ace hardware, lowes, home depot, or the best place is fastenal (if you have one) fastenal likes to sell in bulk and if you go in only wanting 1 or 2 bolts, if cheap, they may just give them to you. Has happened a few times, every other time i go a tell them i want to pay something to make up for the free ones.

dastick, bolt sizing is as follows:

Diameter of bolt/stem-Thread Pitch x Length (Ex. 5/16-24x1.5" or 1-1/2" for SAE or 10mm-.80x1" for metric, for the life of me I don't know why most places still list SAE lengths for metric bolts, but there you have it.)

Most hardware stores have a handy bolt identification display where you can thread in the ones you have to find out diameter and pitch. For length, you just have to measure.

take one of the old bolts with you, the term used for the threads is "pitch". So, first find out if it is metric or standard then go from there. Standard threads are in threads per inch (1/4-20 = 20 threads per inch) but metric ones are threads per mm (12mm-1.5 = 1.5 threads per mm)

Thanks for the replies. Very helpful and informative. I will have a much better understanding of what it is I am looking for when I go into the hardware store.

actually I think I worded that wrong, the metric threads are more like mm per thread. Not threads per mm.

How are you mounting a fairing using a turn signal relocation kit? That doesn't make sense at all.

Check this thread: https://www.hdforums.com/forum/dyna-...ed-help-2.html

Planning to combine what Sickwithit and Billylewis did.

These are the signal relocation brackets I'm using: http://www.kuryakyn.com/index.cfm/go...ID/87/IMID/711

Need to extend the bolts so they will go through the fairing. I will mount the signal light to the outside of the fairing and have a nut on the inside.
