I have two shields for my SG Custom. The first that I got wioth the bike and used for all of about 2 hours was the Detachable Sport Shield. As hard as it is to admit...it looks pretty awesome on the bike, follows the lines, tucks in close to the handlebars unlike most detachables. But it doesnt go very far below the hgeadlight and causes some severe head buffeting for me (I am 6-1)
Windshield 2 is the 14 inch detachable. Same windshiled I think to what you are referring but a bit shorter. I think it is perfect. I get a bit of wind on my head - just enough to offset what is coming from below, but the bulk of the wind is off my chest. I could not be happier. It just looks like a turd on the front of what I think is aperfect looking bike. But I decided I was cool enough that the stuff I own doesnt need to prove it anymore and opted for comfort. I got mine on ebay at half the cost...I would recommend that route if you are unsure.
It worked for me to re direct the wind to hit my head in such a way so highway signs are unreadable, if you can live with being beat up by the wind this is the shield for you.
I have the qd windshield, the one that clamps to the fork tubes, I can move it up or down the tubes, so I can find the spot with the lease buffeting. I do this because I have two seats that give me two different seating heights. stock (cool) looking seat & fugly tallboy seat (comfty for wife) widsheild helps alot on higways.
Like others have said some are ok with it others say beats them up Mine I use on long rides and it works ok for me I had to mess around sliding it up and down tubes till I found the best location.
I have had nothing but good experiences with my compact smoked QD-HD windshield. I dont think it looks that bad either. Sure does take the wind off your chest on long cold rides.
Have one on my '08 FXDC and love it. The only time its off is when I wash the bike. I am 5'9" and have the Sundowner seat. They make a great combo for all day riding with no wind or butt fatigue.
For short trips, half helmit, and sunglasses...... windshield off! Longer trips, 3/4 helmit, and flip down face shield...........windshield on.
Too much buffetting at high speeds to keep sunglasses in position. BTW, I'm 6'3".
I have mixed feelings about mine. The quick release clamps work very well. Short rides are more enjoyable with the wind screen off . On longer, colder trips the advantages of having the windshield offsets the buffeting for me.
I had the compact QD windshield. Had horrible buffetting no matter where I positioned it. BTW I'm only 5'2".
Got tired of the whiplash and stiff neck after rides so last year I bought their "touring" model QD. It's higher and a bit wider. I have it set up high where I can "just" see over it. NO BUFFETTING WHAT SO EVER...wearing half helmet and I'm on a sundowner seat.
Couldn't be happier
