Have run the OE 21" dunlop lasted 17k miles and asside from tracking road cracks it was ok.
Then ran a Metzeler ME880 90/90 21" and it was much better traction wise and the tracking of cracks gone I was very happy with it and roughly 14k miles out of it too.
Now have a Donlup Elite 3 21", few hundred miles on it so no idea of tread life but handling very similar to the ME880. Elite 3 doesn't track the road cracks, but maybe a bit less grippy then the ME880 so may have a longer tread life but who knows.
I have the dunlop 401 on the rear with about 2k on it. The front it th oe 401 with 11k
Did the 06' come with the D401 stock? I would have never went with that tire, but that is what you have so you might as well wear it out? I would go with the K591 on the front, it is only a few dollars more than a front D401 and it grips much better than a D401. There is a reason you get 11k+ out of the D401 on the front, it does not grip worth crap! I would recommend a better front tire like the Night Dragon but a much stickier front tire will probably make the not so sticky rear D401 seem even less so. Also, when you wear out the rear you could go with the K591 rear to match the front and then both the front and rear will most likely wear out and need to be replaced at the same time giving you the option to move to a different matching set of tires if you wish, you make like the K591 combo.
The K591 is not that bad a handling tire, it is my feeling it is the crappy D401 0n the front that makes the stock bike handle so crappy and if they would have matched the K591s to begin with more Dyna riders would be happy with the handling, barring those who really like to push the bike in the twisties.

Metzler's this time around. 170/60-17 on the rear and a 110/90-19 on front. I've got 8000 miles on the rear so far and a few thou left, fronts got 5ooo on it and looks new. I didn't think I'd like the metz but they proved me wrong. But will try the SE's next time..Plus grip is good with the metzlers.
