It seems I have read hundreds of threads in the Touring section that talk about someone switching to a bagger from a softail/sporty/dyna and never switching back. You would expect that point of view from the touring section but I've been wondering if there isn't another perspective of someone that switched to a bagger and switched back. I'll admit to my own bagger bias having ridden a bagger for the last 30 years. Nevertheless, I'd like to think I'm still not to old to develop an appreciation for a different perspective so I decided to post this question in all four sections.
Anybody switch to a bagger then switch back? Reasons?
I can half way claim to do that. I went from a Vulcan Custom, to a Vulcan nomad with full fairing, back to Wide Glide. I have ridden softails, ultras, dynas and metrics. And until something in the very far distant future changes my mind, i will stick with my W.G.
The vulcan custom was set up like a softail, the Nomad like a street glide. I only bought the Nomad because at that time my wife hadnt started riding her own yet and i wanted something to tour on. My Dad has an Ultra that i just cannot get comfortable on. I feel so cramped. I love the feeling of forward controls and either apes or drag bars. Softails are not bad, but dont have the handling that a Dyna does.
I believe most people switch to a bagger for convenience, and i have to admit, i miss my bags, but to me its well worth the sacrifice of strapping on luggage to have the bike i love the look, and love the feel of, and my W.G. gives me that.
I have rented a few different baggers and put a lot of miles on them and I can safely say I don't see myself switch to one anytime soon. That said see my current sig pic, I have the best of both worlds when I take a road trip.
05, wasn't sure on yours because the rear fender looks more like an 05 fender than the later WG's. Must be the angle.
I would really like to have the battery box like yours, mine is so damn blah.... lol
