Default Derby Cover.....

Did a daft thing today and damaged my Derby Cover (dont ask!). Just been looking around on e.Bay for a replacement but not sure what years will fit. Mines a 2002 88 Twin Cam Dyna. Anyone know what years I can get to fit on there. I think it's all post '99 but not 100% sure if the later ones will fit

Cheers for any help

Just off the top of my head I would say post 99 up until they came up with the 96 motors, as I think that the covers are a tad different. Then again they're all 5 holes so maybe they would work too.

Go look at your current derby cover. Make sure the one you purchase has the same number of holes. I've seen 3 and 5 hole derby covers.

Just noticed on E.bay - I may have hold of the wrong end of the stick here. I't's the large cover that goes on the primary case over the clutch plates which I'm after. Some of the E.Bay listings show the small "points" cover as the Derby. Whatever it's called, it's the one that goes over the clutch that I need. The original is now looking decidedly second hand - I have at least had the decency to blush over my stupidity

Derv,

Bad luck you damaged the bike, bro!

To indicate the cover you want to replace several names are used:

cover, clutch, chrome p/n 60668-99 (this is the 5 hole type) in my 2003 parts catalog (Fits '99-'05 Dyna® and '99-'06 Softail® and Touring models.)

derby cover in the H-D accessorie catalog (multiple p/n s, chrome is 60766-06 which fits '06-later Dyna® and '07-later Softail® and Touring models).

Hope this info helps you finding a decent cover at Ebay.

Everybody has dropped their bike. Everybody. Well, just about everybody. I've dropped every bike I've ever owned and will drop the next one if I ever get a 'next' one.

Not proud of it. Kinda embarrassing. But people that haven't dropped thier bikes are either REALLY lucky or they aren't enjoying it enough. Or they don't drink.

**** Happens.

Thanks FXD - much appreciated man - just the info I wanted, you're a top dude

Grendel - Nooooooo! I never dropped the bike - it was something far more embarassing my friend.........You really want to know right?

I did some work on the Harley last week, which included checking the primary chain adjustment and the oil in the case. I took the derby cover off, did all the work but when I came to put the cover back I couldn't find the little torx drive bit I'd used to take it off with, it had fallen off my bench and down behind the compressor. While I was looking for it Mrs Derv called me in for dinner, then a few other things happened and the cover bolts went right out of my head....... until today

My lad was off work so we decided to get the bikes out and head over to a big bike dealership about 15 miles away for lunch, in their biker bistro (they do a really mean Chicken Tikka) We got about 4 miles away, passing through a village and next thing I know there's an SP-1 flying past me with my son hanging off it waving like a demented idiot. So I stopped to see what he wanted - it was then I looked down to see my left boot covered in oil - it was everywhere, swingarm, wheel, me! I rode back home slowly with the oil still peeing out while he went to look for the errant cover - which he told me had tried to launch itself through the gas appliance showrooms window! It's a good job nobody was walking along the footpath, it would have decapitated some poor bugger!

My lad found it, but it's quite badly scratched, it'll have to do for now though, we've got some good weather on the way so I'll fit it back tomorrow, but it really needs to be replaced..

Now that's FAR more embarrasing than merely dropping the bike eh? Anyone can do that but it takes a real 1st class idiot to to what I did. I can't recall ever doing anything that daft in my entire life - I think it must be old age creeping up on me.

Sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

Now, your friends should hear something like, "There I was, minding my own business, when some terrorist-looking types went flying by with a SAM strapped to their back. I hopped on my Harley, gave chase and spun around a hard left turn on my Derby Cover, righted the bike at 50MPH, and chased them half way to Scotland."

Know the difference between a War Story and a Fairy Tale? A Fairy Tale starts out, "Once Upon A Time" and a War Story starts, "This Is No ****."

All very true Grendel, but I'm afraid you have a far better imagination than me! Wish I'd thought of the terrorist with the SAM thing -damn!
