Default Quick Ape Question...

hey guys,

I'm looking at putting some new apes on the ole bobber and this is what I have in mind.

Road6customs has a set that looks a lot like the RSD vintage bars, but for half the price. From all the reviews I've read, they are also high quality. Has anyone had any experience with them? Here's the link

Now, for apes in general, I realize that I'll need wire extensions and all, but is there really anything else to it? I've researched "internal wiring" over and over and it seems to just be a tedious task and not all that complicated.

Who has some insight for me?

I just put some road 6 customs 12" z bars on my '05 super glide last week. I love these bars. The process is almost painless, almost. I used all of the stock cables and wires without any hitches. You may want to relocate the front turn signals to the forks, makes it easier to run wires for controls inside the bars. The only other problem I had was the cables needed to be rerouted, you may not have to. The only other suggestion I have is to pull the main wiring through the frame until you can get to the harnesses for the controls. I broke the harness down and ran the wires through the pars and then put the harness back together so I didn't have to splice the wires. Overall I am completely satisfied with the Road 6 Bars and would highly recommend them. If you have any more questions feel free to ask. I'll include some pics of the finished product.

Yep, more tedious than complicated. Take your time and you'll be ok. Lots of good threads on this board that can guide you through it.

As far as the brand of bars I have never heard of them. but as far as adding things it really depends on what is already there. I put a set of 18" on my wide glide and only changed the throttle cables. if I would have went with 16" I would not have had to change anything. As far as wires mine has a lot of excess under the seet that I just feed through the frame and think there is enough for 22".

I bought a set of the R6C bars, but never put them on the bike, they just did not look good on the Wide Glide due to how narrow they are, and I realized I do not like 1" bars, they look too flimsy to me, just my personal opinion. They also seemed like somewhat soft metal when I drilled them for wiring.

Chuck are your stock cables longer than the ones on SB?

I am not sure but the SB comes with what 8" bars already (I am just judging by the picture, I didnt look it up). the Wide Glide came with the mini apes that are, I think 10". with the way HD makes Items like that (1 part fits all Dyna) I dont see why they wouldnt be, or at least close. Now I will say that 18" is the tallest that I can go, and I had to disconect the brake line from the bracket on the triple tree and straighten it, for them to fit. However I am in the process of getting new cables all the way around, but it was good for a temp thing, untill I could get them. (1 year later)

I was told that they would not fit without changing all the cables but I am stuborn and had to see for myself. If your asking if 18" will fit on your SB I dont know, I would say you would be safe going 4" over what you have. After that you would just have to try and see, unless someone else knows any different.

It is tedious but not hard at all. Just take your time.

I used the novello 12" extension just to give myself extra harness play. Pretty sure you can get away with 6-8" extension. Most people will cut and solder but the novello kit keeps the wiring connections very narrow. I can solder pretty good but to me, the $40 for the novello kit was worth it.
