Default '07 FXDL - Removing stock shift peg

I bought a Kuryakyn shift peg cover (#8004) for my Low Rider. I tried using vice grips to unscrew the stock peg. It is on very tight and I did not want to snap the stalk which the peg is screwed into. Is there a way to remove the stock peg easily? Do I need to cut the stock rubber shift peg cover off first?

Vise grips on the rubber part and twist it off.

I cut back a bit of the rubber on the shift peg to get a better grip with the vise grip pliers.
