I'd rank any of those mechanic gloves at or below jeans as far as protection goes - its not leather and will rip instantly just like jeans will.

I find they are a great riding glove! I keep a few pair around at all times.

Right,...when Sears has a sale I go and pick up at least 4 pair. They come in red/black or black/black but have craftsman printed on the back. They are made by Mechanix wear and are half the price. I have used these for years at work. Motocross gloves are virtually the same type of glove and there may be more styles to choose from if you are style conscious. Probably won't touch $9.99/pair though. Mine also become garden gloves when worn. When the finger tips wear through bad enough they become fingerless gloves. I also keep a pair in my truck.

For the basic nylon/leahter ones I totally agree. They've got a diverse product line though, with some padded, knuckle-protecting gloves that are cheaper than comparable stuff from Wiley-X, Oakley, HD, etc. I'm using a set of Wiley-X knuckle gloves that I got for free a few years ago, but once those wear out I might go with something similar from Mechanix.
