Question Engine Idle

Just recently I notice twiced on my last ride across town something that has never happened before. I was in slow traffic going along in 1st gear for awhile (probably a 1/3 of a mile) at about 2600rpms.

As I came to a stop my engine idle stayed higher than the normal lug lug. I rolled my thottle thinking it had stuck but it was at bottom out of rotation. But it kept idling fast. It did this on two different stops and then went away.

Any ideas what would cause this ?

Drag in the throttle cables ==> oil the cables

Durt in carb ==> use a bottle of carb cleaner in the fuel

My guess is just computer glitch unless your throttle cable is sticking. Any mods done ?

Thanks I think I will try a bottle of that and also remove my AC and clean my IAC with some of that CRC Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner part# 05110 that I read about some time back.

On the maps on my TMAX EFI controller, the cold idle speed is about 1200-1250 RPM ... I find it interesting that the hot (above approx 300 degrees) idle speed is also increased--but not quite as much--to maybe around 1100 RPM

I am not sure what the stock idle speed maps look like based on variation over the range of engine operating temperatures ....

Unless your bike was unusually cold or hot, you might rule out this possibility ... just thought I'd throw it out there ....

Also, if your bike was that hot at this time of year--notwithstanding you are in Florida--you probably have bigger problems than high idle speed ... (like maybe not getting oil flow to the heads) ....

Thanks for the info. But actually it's not that hot down here yet. It was barely in the low 70's the other day when this happened. I gonna clean out my throttle body and then see what happens. It was something new and with EFI I wasn't quite sure what it might be. You guys have put me on the right track.

Yea I need to pull my plugs and look at them anyhow. I bought the bike last year and have never had them out. I was more worried about lean than rich but I will find out.

Shoot a shot of spray carb cleaner in the Idle Air Controller (IAC) and clean the crud out. The stupid things need to be cleaned out periodically or they confuse the crap out of the computer. External breathers seem to do a pretty good job of reducing the frequency of cleaning, but wont eliminate it altogether.

My fast Ide on my XL1200C happened every now and then more and more.
The first thing I did was lube the cables.
The second thing was Carb cleaner
The third thing after a code was pull and cleaned the Crank positon sensor and that worked, for awhile...then I cleaned it again...it worked again.
I never replaced the sensor as I moved up to the Dyna and the dealer deals with it now.
but it was wierd how cleaning it worked. My friend says that you can see it burnt if it's bad but I don't know now.
I thought it was cause I used the class 5 synthetic Maxum maxima extra with esters.
Bike ran great when it calmed down.
